Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings was born in England and attended Liverpool and London University obtaining a BS in architecture. He worked briefly for a naval architect designing ocean liner interiors. In 1929 he joined the decorator Charles Duveen, a brother of Lord Joseph Duveen an important art dealer, and was taken to New York. After Duveen`s death he went his own way, encouraging middle class Americans to embrace the future and invest in good quality Twentieth Century furniture. He has a vast interest in and knowledge of the classcal furniture of ancient Greece which he re interpreted for the modern age.He became the most prestigious interior designer of the period. In 1936 he opened his glamorous showroom in 515 Madison Avenue.Soon Gibbings had an important roster of wealthy clients including Thelma Chrysler, Elizabeth Arden, Neiman Marcus and Aristotle Onassis.In 1948 he became the chief designer for the Widdicombe furniture company and in 1962 his work was included in the Museum of Modern Arts `Good Design` Exhibition.
